Yes, there is a free alternative to YNAB. YNAB charges $14.99 a month or $109 a year, and it builds your budget with the zero-based method: every dollar needs a job before you spend it. AI Money takes a different route, and it’s free. Instead of sitting down to assign your money, you log the expense as it happens: you text it on WhatsApp, send a voice note, or snap a photo of the receipt, and it files it away. They’re two different philosophies, so further down I also say when paying for YNAB is the better call.

Disclosure: this article is published by AI Money, one of the options compared here. That’s why there’s a whole section on when YNAB is still the better choice, and YNAB’s figures were taken from its official page on August 14, 2026.

Almost nobody quits budgeting for lack of willpower. They quit because logging is tiring, or because they don’t want to pay to do it. YNAB and AI Money solve different things: one sells you a method and charges a monthly fee, the other takes the logging steps off your plate and doesn’t charge you to start. Which one fits depends on what’s stopping you right now.

What YNAB is, and why it charges

YNAB (You Need A Budget) is one of the best-known budgeting apps out there. It costs $14.99 a month, or $109 a year if you pay upfront, with a 34-day trial and no card required in advance. A single account covers up to six people, and if you’re a student with a .edu email you get a year free. There’s no separate premium tier: everything comes in the same fee.

And here’s the point: what you’re paying for isn’t really the software. It’s the method. YNAB forces you to give every dollar a job before you spend it, and for a lot of people that discipline is exactly what works. If that’s what you’re after, YNAB is good at it. I won’t deny that to sell you mine.

What you gain, and what you leave on the table

You gain time and you gain consistency. Logging a $3 coffee in YNAB means opening the app, finding the category, and typing the amount. In AI Money you send “coffee 3” to the chat and got on with your day. It sounds like nothing, but it’s exactly that “I’ll log it later” that kills any budget by day three.

What you leave on the table is real too, and I’d rather say it. YNAB has a stricter method that, when you follow it seriously, makes you plan weeks ahead. And it has bank import. AI Money doesn’t impose a method and doesn’t import from your bank today, so the part about assigning every dollar stays on your side.

The sync you pay for might not even cover your bank

YNAB’s automatic import is built mainly for banks in the US and Canada. If your bank isn’t on the list, you’ll end up typing transactions by hand anyway. And that’s when the math gets awkward: $109 a year to do something you’d do for free. Check whether your bank is supported before you pay, not after.

When YNAB is still worth it for you

  • You want the zero-based method with rules, and having that structure on top helps you.
  • Your bank does sync with YNAB and you’d rather transactions come in on their own.
  • Several people will share the budget under one account.

When AI Money fits you better

  • You abandon budgeting apps because opening them feels like a chore.
  • You don’t want to connect your bank to a third party.
  • You want to start today, without studying a system first.

How to start for free

You download the app, link your WhatsApp in Settings (a couple of minutes), and log your first expense. The free plan gives you 2 WhatsApp entries a day, voice notes up to 30 seconds, and 10 photos a day, and the rest of the app is free forever. If you want to see how the apps that do connect to your bank compare, here’s the comparison of finance apps with verified prices. And if you’d rather just try it, the app is available here.

Is there a free alternative to YNAB?

Yes. AI Money is free and logs your expenses through WhatsApp, a voice note, or a photo of the receipt, with automatic categories, accounts, budgets, savings goals, and debts. It doesn’t use YNAB’s zero-based method and doesn’t connect to your bank, so it’s a different, lighter approach for anyone who wants to log without friction and without paying.

How much does YNAB cost?

YNAB costs $14.99 a month or $109 a year, with a 34-day trial and no card required. One subscription covers up to six people, and students with a .edu email get twelve months free. Every feature comes in the same fee, with no separate premium tiers.

Does AI Money connect to my bank?

Not today. Logging comes in through WhatsApp, voice, or photo, and your transaction history stays on your phone. Because the app never connects to your bank, there’s no banking credential that could leak. If your priority is transactions arriving on their own from the bank, an app with a bank connection will serve you better.

Which is better, YNAB or AI Money?

It depends on what’s stopping you. If you want a strict budgeting method and your bank syncs, YNAB is built for that and does it well. If you abandon apps out of the hassle of opening them, or you don’t want to pay or connect your bank, AI Money lets you log in seconds and it’s free. They don’t compete on the same thing.
