How to use Claude for personal finance: from a chat to a connector

You can use Claude for personal finance in three ways: paste or upload your numbers into a chat, keep your budget in a Claude Project, or add a connector that gives Claude your up-to-date figures. All three work on Claude’s Free plan, which includes up to five Projects and one custom connector. Claude is good at sorting a statement into categories, building a budget sheet and checking the math of a plan. Today it doesn’t link to your bank by itself and it isn’t a financial advisor, so cover account numbers before you upload anything and check its totals before you act on them.

About this guide: published by AI Money, a personal finance app. AI Money is not affiliated with Anthropic, which makes Claude, or with OpenAI. Amounts are example figures, and Claude’s features and prices come from Anthropic’s help center and pricing page. Checked on October 5, 2026.

What can Claude do for your personal finances?

Claude works with the numbers you give it. Hand Claude a month of transactions and it sorts them into categories, adds them up and shows where the money went. Give it your income and fixed costs and it drafts a budget, a savings timeline or a debt payoff plan comparing the avalanche and snowball methods. Ask for a spreadsheet and it builds one: Anthropic’s file creation guide says Claude creates Excel files with working formulas, and code execution, which powers that, is on by default on Free, Pro and Max. It also explains terms step by step, like how card interest is charged.

Know the limits, too. Today Claude doesn’t link to your bank on its own: it sees what you paste, upload or connect. Some third-party connectors in Claude’s directory do link bank accounts, such as Era Context, which Era says covers the US, the UK, Canada and more than 40 countries in all. And Claude isn’t a licensed advisor, and its arithmetic can slip, so check every total against your statement.

How do you review your spending in a Claude chat?

A single Claude chat is the quickest start. Download the month’s statement or transaction export, cover the account number, your full name and your address, and attach it with the “+” button at the bottom left of the chat, then “Add files or photos”. According to Anthropic’s upload guide, Claude reads PDF, CSV, TXT and DOCX files, and Excel files when code execution is on, up to 20 files per chat.

Here is my [September] spending as a CSV, account numbers removed. My currency is [USD]. Group it into [rent, groceries, dining out, transport, subscriptions, other]. Give me a table with the total and the share of each category, then three observations with the numbers behind them. List any unclear row instead of guessing.

Here’s my checking account export for September, account numbers removed. Group it by category and tell me what stands out.

I count 86 transactions for about $3,200. The largest groups are rent at $1,400, groceries at $510 and dining out at $380. Delivery apps appear 14 times for $210 in total. Six rows have no clear merchant, so I listed them under “Check” for you.

A chat suits one question about one month, but it starts from zero each time: next month you export, cover and upload again.

How do you set up a Claude Project for your budget?

A Claude Project keeps your budget and your rules in one place, so you don’t repeat them in every chat. Projects exist on every plan, and the Free plan allows up to five, according to Anthropic’s guide to projects.

  1. Open Projects from the left side of Claude (or go to claude.ai/projects) and click “+ New Project”.
  2. In the project knowledge area on the right, click “+” and add your budget sheet or a CSV of fixed costs and categories, account numbers covered.
  3. Click “Set project instructions”, paste rules like the ones below and click “Save instructions”.
  4. Start each monthly review as a new chat inside the Project, with that month’s export attached.

You help me manage my personal budget. Currency: [USD]. I’m paid [on the 1st and the 15th]. My fixed costs and categories are in the attached sheet. Use my categories as they are, show your math, state your assumptions and list rows you couldn’t categorize. Don’t recommend specific investments or tax moves; tell me when a question needs a professional.

Using my budget sheet, can I afford a $1,200 trip in December?

With your $400 monthly surplus and the $450 already in your travel goal, you’d have $1,250 by the end of November. That assumes October and November look like September; if a bill changes, so does the date.

Chats inside a Project don’t share context unless it’s in the project knowledge, Anthropic notes, so write decisions like a new grocery limit into the sheet. And the Project knows your last upload, not what you spent yesterday.

How do you give Claude your up-to-date numbers?

The third way is a connector, which lets Claude read and act in an app that holds your data. Claude calls them custom connectors, built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Anthropic’s connector guide says they’re available on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, with Free limited to one custom connector; on Team and Enterprise an Owner adds it to the organization first.

AI Money is a personal finance app for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android, and its Elite plan includes a connector for Claude. Claude reads a summary your phone prepares: balances by account, savings, debts, each budget and how much is used, this month’s income and spending with the top five categories, last month’s spending, payments due in the next 45 days, your last 20 transactions and your investments. Claude can log an expense or income, which shows up in AI Money like one sent by WhatsApp. It can also propose a budget, a savings goal, a subscription, a recurring payment or a new account, which AI Money applies when you open it, with an Undo button. Anything that moves money or deletes waits for your yes in the app.

How am I doing this month? Also, log $18 for lunch.

Logged: $18 under Dining out, today. This month you’ve spent $2,140 of the $2,600 you budgeted. Dining out is at 92% of its $300 limit with 9 days to go. Your next payment is car insurance, $150 on the 12th.

How do you connect AI Money to Claude?

You connect AI Money to Claude once, from a computer, and then use it in any chat:

  1. In Claude on the web or in the desktop app, go to Customize › Connectors, click “+ Add” and then “Add custom connector”.
  2. Name it AI Money, paste https://mcp.ai-money.app/mcp as the address, click Continue, leave the sign-in settings Claude detects as they are and click Add. Claude opens an AI Money page that asks for a code.
  3. In the AI Money app, go to Settings › AI assistants › Connect an assistant › Get the code. The code has 8 characters and expires in 5 minutes.
  4. Type the code on that page and tap Connect. In a chat, turn AI Money on from the “+” button › Connectors.

Claude sees the summary as of AI Money’s last update, and it isn’t your full history, so “how much did I spend on Uber in March?” has no answer today unless the summary covers it. And AI Money doesn’t connect to banks today: Claude sees what you logged by hand, by WhatsApp, by voice or with a receipt photo, which is why it works in any country, without linking your bank. The full steps, ChatGPT’s included, are on the AI Money connector page.

Which setup should you choose?

Choose your Claude setup by how often you want to ask and how fresh the numbers need to be: start with a chat, move to a Project once the monthly review becomes a habit, and add a connector when uploading files every month gets tedious.

Can skills or Cowork help with your finances?

Skills and Cowork are real Claude features, but neither brings your numbers. A skill is a folder of instructions that Claude loads when a task calls for it. Anthropic’s skills guide says skills work on every plan, Free included, with code execution on; a simple one is just instructions in Markdown, added in Customize › Skills. For your money, a skill fits a routine, such as a monthly review that always uses your eight categories and ends with the same table. In Anthropic’s framing, connectors give Claude data and tools, and skills teach it how to use them.

Cowork was Claude’s mode for bigger jobs. On September 16, 2026, Anthropic merged Cowork and chat into one Claude, rolling out to Pro and Max first, with Free and Team to follow. You can hand Claude something larger, like turning twelve monthly exports into an annual spending report, and by default Claude asks before it takes an action.

Is it safe to give Claude your financial information?

Giving Claude your financial information can be safe if you control what goes in. Never give Claude, or any AI, your bank password, your full card number or your ID documents. Before you upload a statement, cover the account number, your full name and your address. A budget doesn’t need them: “checking account, $3,200 spent in September” is enough.

Then decide how Anthropic may use your chats. On Free, Pro and Max you choose whether your chats help train Claude, with the toggle Anthropic calls “Help improve our AI models” in Settings › Privacy (how to change it). If you allow it, Anthropic may keep that data in de-identified form for up to five years, and a chat you delete leaves its back-end systems within 30 days (retention policy). Incognito chats, started from the ghost icon in a new chat, aren’t used for training or saved to your history, though Anthropic keeps them for 30 days; in the new Claude experience they can’t run code or create files. Memory is on by default on Free, Pro and Max; to keep a money chat out of it, turn off “Memory” in the “+” menu before your first message.

What happens to your data when Claude uses a connector?

Anthropic says the data it may use to improve Claude doesn’t include raw content from connectors, remote MCP servers included, unless that content is copied directly into the conversation (Anthropic Privacy Center). Its connector guide adds two cautions: connect only servers you trust, because a malicious one can hide instructions for Claude, and choose “Allow always” only for tools you trust to run unsupervised.

AI Money connects through OAuth, so AI Money never sees your Claude password and Claude never gets your AI Money one. AI Money keeps the summary on its servers while at least one assistant is connected, even with cloud backup off, and deletes it when you disconnect the last one. Turn off “Let your assistant see your numbers” and AI Money switches to Log only: just the names of your accounts and categories go up, with no amounts, and Claude can only log transactions. Anthropic processes your questions under your Claude account’s terms (details in section 3 of the AI Money privacy policy).

Can you use Claude as a financial advisor?

Claude can’t replace a licensed advisor. It can explain your options, run the numbers on a plan and help you write down what to ask a professional, but it only knows what you told it. Anthropic’s own product in this field, Claude for Financial Advisors, announced on September 14, 2026, is a set of connectors and skills for professional advisors, and Anthropic recommends Enterprise plans for registered investment advisers.

For investments, ask Claude for analysis, not picks: “compare the fees of these two funds” or “what would $200 a month grow to at [5]% a year, and what does that assume?”, rather than “what should I buy?”. AI Money isn’t a bank, a broker or an advisor either.

Which prompts work for personal finance in Claude?

A good finance prompt gives Claude five things: context (what the money is for), the currency, the time frame, the format you want back, and permission to state its assumptions. Two more to copy:

I have three debts: [card A, $2,000 at 24% APR, minimum $60], [card B, $900 at 19% APR, minimum $35] and [car loan, $6,500 at 7%, $210 a month]. I can put [$450] a month toward them. Compare the avalanche and snowball methods: months to pay off, total interest and order of payments. Show your math and assumptions.

Using AI Money: compare what I’ve spent this month with last month’s total, tell me which budget is closest to its limit and list the payments due in the next two weeks.

The first works in any chat; the second needs AI Money connected. Our personal finance prompt library has more than 30 by topic, each in a version for a connected assistant and one with brackets for your own numbers.

How much does it cost to use Claude for your finances?

Using Claude for your finances can cost nothing on the Free plan. Claude Pro costs USD 20 a month, or USD 17 a month billed yearly (USD 200 up front), and Max starts at USD 100 a month, according to claude.com/pricing as loaded from Colombia on October 5, 2026, in US dollars and before tax. The five-Project limit applies only to Free.

Claude Free includes chat on web, desktop and mobile, file creation, memory, up to 5 Projects and 1 custom connector: enough for all three setups.

On AI Money’s side, the app has a free plan, and the Claude connector is part of Elite: USD 9.99 a month or USD 79.99 a year on the US App Store, with a local price in each country. If you use ChatGPT, see our ChatGPT personal finance guide or the Claude vs ChatGPT comparison.

Questions about using Claude for personal finance

Is Claude good for personal finance?

Claude is useful for personal finance tasks that start from your own numbers: sorting a month of transactions into categories, drafting a budget, comparing debt payoff methods, building a spreadsheet and explaining financial terms. Claude works only from what you paste, upload or connect, so its answers are as good as that data. Claude isn’t a licensed advisor and can make mistakes, so check its totals against your statements before acting on them.

Can Claude connect to my bank account?

As of October 5, 2026, Claude doesn’t link to bank accounts by itself. Claude works with files you upload, numbers you paste and data from connectors. Some third-party connectors in Claude’s directory, such as Era Context, link bank accounts through data providers. AI Money doesn’t link banks: Claude sees what you logged in AI Money.

Is it safe to upload bank statements to Claude?

Uploading a statement to Claude is reasonable if you prepare the file first. Cover the account number, your full name and your address, and never share passwords, full card numbers or ID documents. On Claude Free, Pro and Max you can turn off model training in Settings › Privacy, and incognito chats aren’t used for training. Anthropic says a deleted chat leaves its back-end systems within 30 days.

Do I need Claude Pro to use Claude for my finances?

No. Claude Free includes file uploads, code execution for spreadsheets, memory, up to five Projects and one custom connector, which can be AI Money, as of October 5, 2026. Claude Pro costs USD 20 a month, or USD 17 a month billed yearly, and adds more usage without the five-Project limit. The AI Money connector itself requires AI Money Elite, whichever Claude plan you use.

Can I use Claude for my finances on my phone?

Yes. Claude has apps for iPhone and Android, and Anthropic says custom connectors run through its cloud on every Claude client, the mobile apps included. You add the AI Money connector once from a computer, at claude.ai or in the Claude desktop app, and from then on you can ask about your budget or log an expense from the Claude app on your phone.

Can Claude be my financial advisor?

No. Claude can explain options, run the math on a plan and help you prepare questions, but Claude isn’t a licensed financial advisor and only knows what you tell it. Anthropic’s Claude for Financial Advisors, announced on September 14, 2026, is a tool for professional advisors, not a consumer service. AI Money isn’t an advisor either: it organizes what you log and lets Claude read a summary of it.

How do I stop Claude from training on my financial chats?

On Claude Free, Pro and Max, open Settings, then Privacy, and turn off the toggle Anthropic calls “Help improve our AI models”. Claude’s new chats then aren’t used for future model training. For a single sensitive question you can also start an incognito chat from the ghost icon: Anthropic doesn’t use incognito chats for training, doesn’t save them to your history and keeps them for 30 days.

Does AI Money work with Claude’s free plan?

Yes. Claude Free allows one custom connector, and that one can be AI Money. You add https://mcp.ai-money.app/mcp in Claude under Customize › Connectors, then enter the 8-character code from Settings › AI assistants in the AI Money app. On AI Money’s side, the connector is part of the Elite plan: USD 9.99 a month or USD 79.99 a year on the US App Store.
