Claude vs ChatGPT for personal finance: which one is better for you?
Claude and ChatGPT can both help with personal finance, and the right one depends on where you live and what you want the assistant to reach. If you’re in the U.S. and want your bank linked, ChatGPT has its own Finances feature, built on Plaid, which OpenAI has been rolling out to Free and Go users since October 2, 2026. If you live elsewhere, or want a free plan that accepts a custom connector, Claude Free takes one and ChatGPT Free takes none. Neither one replaces a financial adviser. AI Money’s connector works on every Claude plan, Free included, so Claude can read your up-to-date summary and log expenses without linking your bank.

Disclosure: this comparison is published by AI Money, a personal finance app with a connector for AI assistants. AI Money isn’t affiliated with Anthropic, which makes Claude, or with OpenAI, which makes ChatGPT. Prices and features come from each company’s official pages, and the amounts in the chat examples are round example figures. Checked on October 5, 2026.
Most Claude vs ChatGPT comparisons are about writing or code. With money, other things decide it: whether the assistant can see your accounts, what the free plan allows, whether it works on your phone and whether your chats train the model.
How do Claude and ChatGPT compare for personal finance?
Prices are in U.S. dollars before tax; other countries may see local prices.
| What you need | Claude | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | Yes, $0 | Yes, $0 |
| First paid plan | Pro: $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly ($200 up front) | Go: $8 a month. Plus: $20 a month. No yearly billing |
| Custom connector (MCP) | Every plan; Free allows one | Not on Free or Go. Write access in beta on Business, Enterprise and Edu; Pro is read-only; Plus isn’t listed |
| Built-in bank linking | No | Finances, through Plaid: U.S. only, on Free, Go, Plus and Pro |
| Memory across chats | Yes, Free included | Yes, Free included |
| File analysis (CSV, PDF, Excel) | Yes, Free included; up to 20 files per chat | Yes, Free included; 3 uploads a day on Free |
| Custom connector on your phone | Yes, once you add it on a computer | No: custom MCP apps are web only |
| Training on your chats | You can turn it off (Settings › Privacy) | You can turn it off (Settings › Data controls) |
Read it this way: ChatGPT is ahead if you live in the U.S. and want your accounts synced for you, and its entry-level paid plan costs less. Claude is ahead if you want a custom connector without paying, if you’ll ask from your phone, or if you’d rather pay by the year. On memory, file analysis and training controls, the two are close.
Can Claude or ChatGPT connect to your bank account?
ChatGPT can, if you live in the U.S. Its Finances feature links your financial accounts through Plaid, which covers more than 12,000 institutions according to OpenAI, and shows a dashboard with spending by category, subscriptions, upcoming payments and net worth. OpenAI launched it for Pro users on May 15, 2026, added Plus in June and has been rolling it out to Free and Go since October 2, 2026, on the web, iOS and Android (OpenAI Help Center).
The feature reads; it doesn’t act. OpenAI says ChatGPT can’t move money, pay bills or make trades, can’t see full account numbers, and deletes the synced data within 30 days after you disconnect. Your usual training setting applies to those chats, and temporary chats don’t touch your accounts.
Finances in ChatGPT works only in the U.S. In Canada, the U.K., Mexico or Spain, neither ChatGPT nor Claude links your bank today.
Claude has no built-in way to link your bank today. The finance product Anthropic launched on September 14, 2026, Claude for Financial Advisors, is made for advisory firms and recommends Enterprise plans; it isn’t meant for your household budget. To give Claude your numbers, you paste them, upload a file or add a custom connector.
Which free plan does more for your money, Claude’s or ChatGPT’s?
Claude Free includes memory across conversations, web search, file uploads and code execution, so it can read a CSV of your spending and hand back an Excel file with working formulas (Claude pricing). You get up to five Projects to keep a budget file and its instructions together. It also accepts one custom connector, which is enough for a personal finance app (Anthropic support).
ChatGPT Free also has memory and file uploads, capped at three uploads a day, and if you’re in the U.S. it’s getting Finances. What it doesn’t include is custom MCP connectors: Free and Go can’t add them, and on the plans that can, you create them on chatgpt.com rather than in the app.
Custom connectors on the free plan: one in Claude, none in ChatGPT.
Which one costs less if you pay: Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus?
ChatGPT has the lower entry price: Go costs $8 a month, while Claude Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month if you pay $200 for the year. ChatGPT Plus also costs $20 a month, and OpenAI doesn’t offer yearly billing for Go, Plus or Pro (OpenAI pricing). In other countries, the final price can change with local currency and taxes.
The math changes if you want a connector. In ChatGPT it depends on your plan: OpenAI’s help center (checked October 5, 2026) says connectors that can write, such as logging an expense, are in beta for Business, Enterprise and Edu, and that Pro connects with read-only access; Plus isn’t listed. Free and Go can’t add custom connectors. On Claude, the free plan already covers one connector, and the one-connector limit applies only to Free.
Do Claude and ChatGPT train on your financial chats?
Both can, and both let you turn it off. In Claude, it’s the model-improvement switch under Settings › Privacy (Anthropic privacy center); in ChatGPT, it’s Improve the model for everyone, under Settings › Data controls. Incognito chats in Claude and temporary chats in ChatGPT aren’t used for training.
Two details matter when you talk about money. Anthropic says it doesn’t use the raw content that arrives through connectors, remote MCP servers included, unless that content is copied into the conversation. And on both assistants, a thumbs-up or thumbs-down can send the whole conversation for review and training.
Whichever one you use, some things never go in a chat: your bank password, your full card number or your ID documents. If you upload a statement, cover the account numbers, your address and anything else that identifies you before you send it.
Claude or ChatGPT: which one fits your situation?
Pick by what you need, not by brand.
| Your situation | Fits better | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You live in the U.S. and want your bank synced | ChatGPT | Finances links accounts through Plaid and is reaching Free and Go |
| You live outside the U.S. | Claude | Finances is U.S.-only; Claude takes a custom connector on every plan, Free included |
| You want to pay $0 for the assistant | Claude | One custom connector on Free; ChatGPT Free and Go take none |
| You ask from your phone | Claude | Connectors work in Claude’s mobile apps; ChatGPT’s custom MCP apps are web only |
| You log expenses on WhatsApp or by voice | Claude, with AI Money | AI Money records them and Claude reads them later |
| You use more than one currency | Claude, with AI Money | AI Money handles several currencies and tells the assistant which one is yours |
| You pay for ChatGPT at work (Business, Enterprise or Edu) | ChatGPT, if your admin enables it | OpenAI allows connectors that can write there, in beta |
| You pay for ChatGPT Plus or Pro | Claude, for AI Money | OpenAI lists Pro as read-only and doesn’t list Plus; Claude Free takes one connector |
Whichever you choose, treat the answers as help to analyze and plan. An AI assistant isn’t a financial adviser, and decisions about investing, taxes or debt deserve a professional’s review. How do you connect AI Money to Claude or ChatGPT?
AI Money is a personal finance app for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android where you log expenses by hand, on WhatsApp, by voice or from a receipt photo. Its Elite plan includes a connector, an MCP server, at https://mcp.ai-money.app/mcp. Claude is the route AI Money has tested end to end, and it works on every Claude plan, Free included (one custom connector). In AI Money, go to Settings › AI assistants › Connect an assistant and tap Get the code; the code has 8 characters and expires in 5 minutes. The full steps are on the connector page, and the app always shows the current ones.
- Claude: you add it from claude.ai or the desktop app, under Customize › Connectors, as a custom connector. On Free it can be your one connector, and after that you can use it in Claude’s phone app too.
- ChatGPT: it depends on the plan. OpenAI’s help center lists write access in beta for Business, Enterprise and Edu and read-only access for Pro; Plus isn’t listed, and Free and Go can’t add custom connectors. Where it’s allowed, you create a custom MCP server on chatgpt.com.
What can Claude do with AI Money connected?
Once connected, Claude can read your summary, log an expense or an income straight into AI Money, and propose changes; in ChatGPT, what the assistant can do depends on your plan’s permissions. A budget, a savings goal, a subscription, a recurring payment or a new account are applied on their own when you open the app, with a notice and an Undo button. Anything that moves money or deletes, the app always asks you first. Here’s how that looks in Claude, with example figures:
How am I doing this month compared with last month?
So far this month you’ve spent $1,840, and last month you spent $2,310 in total. Dining out leads at $420, and you’ve used 78% of your $780 grocery budget.
Log $12 for lunch, paid with my debit card.
Done: a $12 expense in Food, from your Debit card account, dated today. You’ll see it in AI Money the next time you open the app.
Move $200 to my emergency fund.
I’ve sent that to AI Money as a proposal. Moving money needs your OK, so open the app and confirm the card; until then, nothing changes.
What can the assistant see in AI Money, and what not yet?
The assistant works from a summary that your phone builds with the same numbers AI Money shows on screen, and uploads whenever something changes or you open the app. It includes balances by account, savings, debts, budgets and how much of each you’ve used, funds you share with a partner, this month’s income and spending with the five categories where you spent the most and last month’s spending, payments due in the next 45 days, your last 20 transactions and your investments. Anything you’ve hidden in the app stays out.
It doesn’t hold your full transaction history today, so a question like “how much did I spend on Uber in March?” only gets an answer if it shows up in that summary. If you’d rather the assistant only log, switch off Let your assistant see your numbers: in Log only mode, it gets account and category names with no amounts at all.
How does the AI Money connector handle your privacy?
The connection uses OAuth, so AI Money never sees your Claude or ChatGPT password and the assistant never gets your AI Money one. When a new assistant connects, the app warns you with a “You connected a new assistant” notice and an “It was me” button. The summary is stored on AI Money’s servers while at least one assistant is connected, even if cloud backup is off, and it’s deleted when you disconnect the last one.
What you ask is processed by Anthropic or OpenAI under the terms of your own account there, so whether those chats train a model depends on your settings with them. AI Money doesn’t connect to any bank today: the assistant sees what you logged yourself, as in any budget app without bank linking. The connector is part of Elite, which costs $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year on the U.S. App Store, with local prices in other countries. You can connect up to five assistants and disconnect each one from the same screen, with immediate effect, and a proposal nobody confirms expires after 7 days. More in the privacy policy.
What about Gemini?
Google’s Gemini also accepts custom apps by their MCP server address: you add them at gemini.google.com and then use them on the web and in the mobile app. Today Google limits the feature to people 18 or older in the U.S., signed in with a personal Google account, with Keep Activity on, and in English only (Gemini Apps Help).
Frequently asked questions about Claude vs ChatGPT for personal finance
Neither wins everywhere. ChatGPT is ahead if you live in the U.S. and want your bank linked, because its Finances feature syncs accounts through Plaid and has been reaching Free and Go users since October 2, 2026. Claude is ahead if you want a custom connector on the free plan or on your phone, and it’s the route AI Money has tested end to end. On memory, file analysis and training controls they are close, and neither replaces a financial adviser.
Not directly today. Claude has no built-in bank linking for personal use, and Anthropic’s Claude for Financial Advisors is made for advisory firms. You can paste your numbers, upload a statement with the account numbers covered, or add a custom connector such as AI Money, which gives Claude a summary of what you track in the app. AI Money doesn’t connect to banks either: it works with what you log.
No. As of October 5, 2026, OpenAI’s help center says Finances in ChatGPT is available in the U.S. to Free, Go, Plus and Pro users on the web, iOS and Android, with accounts linked through Plaid. Outside the U.S., ChatGPT can still analyze statements you upload. If you want an assistant to read and update a budget app like AI Money from any country, Claude is the route AI Money has tested, Free plan included.
Yes. Anthropic’s support article says custom connectors using remote MCP are available on Claude Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, and Free is limited to one. That one can be AI Money: you add https://mcp.ai-money.app/mcp from claude.ai or the desktop app, enter the code AI Money gives you, and then use it on your phone too. The AI Money connector itself is part of the Elite plan.
In the U.S., Claude Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month if you pay $200 for the year, and ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month with no yearly option. ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month, but Free and Go can’t add custom connectors. Elsewhere, local currency and taxes can change the final price. Prices checked on October 5, 2026.
They can, and both let you turn it off. In Claude it’s the model-improvement switch under Settings, Privacy; in ChatGPT it’s Improve the model for everyone, under Settings, Data controls. Incognito chats in Claude and temporary chats in ChatGPT aren’t used for training. Anthropic also says it doesn’t use raw content from connectors such as AI Money unless it’s copied into the chat.
No single one wins in every case. In the U.S., ChatGPT Free is getting Finances, which links accounts through Plaid. Outside the U.S., Claude Free is the one that accepts a custom connector at no cost, along with memory, file uploads and code execution. To keep track of your money itself, AI Money has a free plan; its connector, which works on every Claude plan, is part of Elite.
It depends on the plan. OpenAI’s help center, checked on October 5, 2026, says connectors that can write, such as logging an expense, are in beta for Business, Enterprise and Edu, and that Pro connects with read-only access; Plus isn’t listed. Free and Go can’t add custom connectors. Claude is the route AI Money has tested end to end, and it works on every Claude plan, Free included.
