How to use ChatGPT for personal finance (and to track your expenses)

You can use ChatGPT for personal finance in four ways: its Finances feature, which links U.S. bank accounts through Plaid; a statement or spreadsheet you upload after removing account numbers; a Project that keeps your budget files and instructions together; or a connector to a budgeting app such as AI Money. Finances works only in the U.S., and since October 2, 2026 it has been rolling out to Free and Go users, after Plus and Pro. Everywhere else, ChatGPT works with what you give it. In every case it can sort, add up, explain and plan; it can’t move money, and it isn’t a financial adviser.

Disclosure: this guide is published by AI Money, a personal finance app with its own AI assistant. AI Money isn’t affiliated with OpenAI, which makes ChatGPT, or with Anthropic, which makes Claude. Amounts are round examples in US dollars. ChatGPT’s features, plans and menu names change often; everything here was checked on October 5, 2026.

OpenAI says more than 200 million people come to ChatGPT every month for budgeting, investment questions and planning. What it can do with your money depends on where you live, your plan and the data you give it.

What can ChatGPT do for your personal finances?

ChatGPT is good at the reading, sorting and explaining side of money: grouping a month of spending into categories, spotting forgotten subscriptions, turning your income and fixed costs into a draft budget, or comparing two ways to pay off a debt. Two limits apply to every method. It only knows the numbers it can see, and it can get categories and long sums wrong, so ask it to show how it reached each total and check key figures against your bank.

How does ChatGPT’s Finances feature work, and who can use it?

Finances is ChatGPT’s built-in money space. You link accounts through Plaid, a service connected to more than 12,000 financial institutions, and ChatGPT builds a dashboard with spending by category, upcoming payments, subscriptions, net worth and investments; an Experian credit score can be added as a separate connection. You can ask from the Finances page or type @Finances in any chat. According to OpenAI’s announcement, access has grown in three steps:

  • May 15, 2026: a preview for Pro users in the U.S., on the web and iOS.
  • June 25, 2026: Plus and Pro users in the U.S., on the web, iOS and Android.
  • October 2, 2026: rolling out to Free and Go users in the U.S.

In the U.S., OpenAI’s help article lists the steps:

  1. Open Finances in ChatGPT and select Get started.
  2. Select Connect with Plaid, sign in and choose the institutions you want to link.
  3. Return to ChatGPT. Syncing and sorting your transactions usually takes a few minutes.

Outside the U.S. (Canada, the U.K., Latin America) Finances isn’t available, so the other three methods are the ones that work.

Is it safe to connect ChatGPT to your bank account?

Here is what OpenAI publishes about the Finances connection:

  • Read-only. ChatGPT sees balances, transactions, investments and debts, but not full account numbers. It can’t move money, pay bills, make trades, open or close accounts, or file taxes.
  • You sign in through Plaid, not in the chat. For the credit score, OpenAI asks you to type personal details only in Experian’s form.
  • Training follows your setting. To keep Finances chats out of model training, turn off Improve the model for everyone in Settings › Data controls. Rating an answer with a thumbs up or down can still let OpenAI use that conversation.
  • Temporary chats stay out. In a temporary chat, ChatGPT doesn’t access your linked accounts.
  • Disconnecting deletes the synced data. Use Settings › Apps › Finances or the Finances page. OpenAI and Plaid each delete the data from that connection within 30 days, and financial memories are deleted separately, from the Finances page.

Disconnecting ChatGPT Finances deletes the synced account data within 30 days, but not your chats: conversations where you discussed your money stay in your ChatGPT history until you delete them.

Because the connection only reads, protect your ChatGPT login first: OpenAI suggests turning on multi-factor authentication.

How do you analyze a bank statement or spreadsheet with ChatGPT?

Uploading a file works in any country and on ChatGPT’s free plan, which allows three uploads a day, according to OpenAI’s file uploads FAQ. Prepare the file first:

  1. Download your transactions as CSV or Excel. A spreadsheet beats a scanned PDF: outside ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT reads a document’s text and drops the images in it.
  2. Keep the date, description and amount. Delete account and card numbers, your name, your address and reference numbers.
  3. Never upload ID documents, passwords, full card numbers or security codes; ChatGPT doesn’t need them.
  4. If you don’t want the chat kept, use a temporary chat: it isn’t used for training while it stays temporary and stays out of your history, though OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety.

Then give ChatGPT a precise job:

I’m uploading my transactions for [month] in [currency]: date, description and amount, with account numbers removed. Group them into at most [10] categories, show a table with the total per category and its share of the month, list my 5 largest expenses, and list separately any line you couldn’t categorize instead of guessing. Show how you calculated each total.

Should you use a ChatGPT Project or a custom GPT for your budget?

If you review your budget every month, a Project saves you from explaining yourself each time. It keeps chats, files and instructions together and is available on the free plan: select New project in the sidebar, add your budget sheet and recent transactions, and write instructions that apply to every chat inside it. According to OpenAI’s article on Projects, a project holds up to 5 files on Free, 25 on Go and Plus, and 40 on Pro, and its memory can be limited to the project.

You help me review my household budget in [currency]. Use only the files in this project; if a figure isn’t there, say so instead of estimating it. Start with a short table, then give me at most three observations. Don’t recommend investments or financial products.

As for custom GPTs, OpenAI’s help center says personal accounts (Free, Go, Plus and Pro) can’t create or publish new GPTs, and that OpenAI plans to retire custom GPTs in favor of Plugins. Existing GPTs still work; for a personal budget, use a Project.

Can ChatGPT track your expenses day to day?

In the U.S., with Finances linked, yes: ChatGPT reads the transactions your accounts sync and sorts them by category. Elsewhere, ChatGPT tracks only what you bring it, so daily tracking needs a place where each expense gets written down, such as a spreadsheet or a budgeting app. A chat isn’t a ledger. A connector closes that gap: the assistant reads a summary from the app where you already log your money and, if your plan allows it, adds new expenses to it.

AI Money is a personal finance app for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android: you log expenses by hand, by WhatsApp, by voice or with a receipt photo, and keep budgets, debts, savings, several currencies and investments. Its Elite plan includes a connector (an MCP server) that lets an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT tell you how your month is going and, where the assistant allows it, log expenses or income. Elite costs 9.99 USD a month or 79.99 USD a year on the U.S. App Store; each country pays its local price.

How do you connect AI Money to ChatGPT?

You need AI Money Elite. Claude is the route AI Money has tested end to end, and it works on every Claude plan, Free included (one custom connector); the AI Money connector page has those steps. In ChatGPT it depends on your plan: OpenAI’s help center (checked October 5, 2026) says connectors that can write, such as logging an expense, are in beta for Business, Enterprise and Edu, and that Pro connects with read-only access; Plus isn’t listed. Free and Go can’t add custom connectors. If your plan allows it, these are the steps on chatgpt.com:

  1. On chatgpt.com, open Settings › Security and login and turn on Developer mode.
  2. Go to Plugins (chatgpt.com/plugins), select + and choose Create custom MCP server. Name it AI Money and enter https://mcp.ai-money.app/mcp. Accept the risk warning ChatGPT shows, and it creates the server.
  3. ChatGPT opens an AI Money page that asks for a code. In the AI Money app, go to Settings › AI assistants › Connect an assistant › Get the code. The code has 8 characters and expires in 5 minutes. Check that the page sending you back belongs to ChatGPT, and don’t read the code to anyone.
  4. Type the code and select Connect.
  5. In a new chat, add AI Money from the tools menu, or type @ and pick it.

OpenAI renames these menus often (in July 2026, “Connectors” became “Plugins”); if a label doesn’t match, the AI Money app shows the current steps. Two questions that only read, with round, made-up figures:

How’s my budget going this month?

You’ve spent $1,840 of the $2,500 you budgeted. Dining is at 92% of its $300 limit with 10 days to go, and your $1,200 rent is due on the 1st.

What payments are due in the next two weeks?

Your $1,200 rent on the 1st and a $45 phone bill on the 3rd. You have $660 left in this month’s budget.

What does ChatGPT see through AI Money?

ChatGPT reads a summary that your phone builds with the same math as the app’s screens and uploads when something changes or you open the app: balances, savings, debts, budgets and how much of each you’ve used, a couple’s shared funds, this month’s income and spending with the top five categories, last month’s spending, payments due in 45 days, your last 20 transactions and your investments. Modules you’ve hidden in AI Money stay out. Today it doesn’t search your whole history, so “How much did I spend on Uber in March?” only works if that’s in the summary. To share no figures, turn off Let your assistant see your numbers: with Log only, your assistant gets just account and category names and can only log transactions.

What can ChatGPT change in AI Money, and is it safe?

When your assistant can write, changes follow the app’s rule: “Anything that moves money or deletes, the app always asks you first.”

  • Applied when you open AI Money, with an Undo button: a spending limit for a category, a savings goal, a subscription, a recurring payment or a new account that starts at zero.
  • Waiting for your OK in the app: moving money between accounts or into savings, debts and debt payments, paying a credit card, marking a bill as paid, correcting or removing a transaction, and recategorizing several at once. Unconfirmed proposals expire after 7 days.

ChatGPT adds its own check: by default it asks you before a connector tool writes data, according to OpenAI’s guide to custom MCP servers. The connection uses OAuth, so neither side sees the other’s password, and you can connect up to 5 assistants and cut any of them off instantly in Settings › AI assistants. The summary stays on AI Money’s servers while an assistant is connected, even with cloud backup off, and is deleted when you disconnect the last one. What you ask is processed by OpenAI under your ChatGPT account terms (see section 3 of the AI Money privacy policy).

ChatGPT Finances or the AI Money connector: which should you choose?

Finances is the better fit if you live in the U.S. and want your bank linked with no typing; the AI Money connector covers the other cases.

Which prompts work for budgeting in ChatGPT?

A useful finance prompt states the currency, the period, your numbers or where to find them, the format you want back and permission to say what it doesn’t know. Two to start with:

My take-home pay is [amount] [currency] a month. Fixed costs: [rent, utilities, loan payments, with amounts]. Last month I spent [amount] on [categories]. Propose a monthly budget with a spending limit per category and a line for savings, state the assumptions you made, and give me a stricter and a more flexible version.

Using AI Money, how does my spending this month compare with last month, which five categories am I spending the most on, and which payments are due in the next two weeks?

The second is short because ChatGPT already has your figures. More prompts, connected and copy-and-paste, are in our personal finance prompts for Claude and ChatGPT.

Frequently asked questions about ChatGPT and personal finance

Can ChatGPT track my expenses?

Yes, in two situations. In the U.S., ChatGPT’s Finances feature reads the transactions from the bank and card accounts you link through Plaid and sorts them by category. Anywhere else, ChatGPT only tracks what you give it, so you need a place where each expense is recorded, such as a spreadsheet or a budgeting app. With AI Money’s connector, ChatGPT can read a summary of your month in any country; whether it can also log expenses depends on your ChatGPT plan.

Is it safe to connect ChatGPT to my bank account?

ChatGPT’s Finances feature connects through Plaid with read-only access: ChatGPT sees balances, transactions, investments and debts, but not full account numbers, and it can’t move money, pay bills or make trades. Those chats follow your ChatGPT training setting in Settings › Data controls. Disconnecting in Settings › Apps › Finances deletes the synced data within 30 days. Turning on multi-factor authentication adds protection to your ChatGPT account.

Is it safe to upload bank statements to ChatGPT?

It’s safer when you upload less. Before you upload a statement to ChatGPT, export a spreadsheet with only the date, description and amount, and delete account and card numbers, your name and your address. Never upload ID documents, passwords or full card numbers. A temporary chat isn’t used to train OpenAI’s models while it stays temporary, and you can turn off Improve the model for everyone in Settings › Data controls.

Is ChatGPT Finances available outside the U.S.?

Not as of October 5, 2026. OpenAI lists ChatGPT Finances as available in the U.S. to Free, Go, Plus and Pro users on the web, iOS and Android, with Free and Go rolling out since October 2. Outside the U.S., you can use ChatGPT with an uploaded statement, a Project, or a connector to a budgeting app such as AI Money, which works without linking a bank.

Can I use ChatGPT for budgeting for free?

Yes. On ChatGPT’s free plan you can paste your numbers, upload up to three files a day and create Projects that hold up to five files each, and in the U.S. Finances is rolling out to free users. Connectors are different: Free and Go can’t add custom connectors. To use AI Money with a free assistant, Claude is the route AI Money has tested end to end, and Claude’s free plan allows one custom connector; AI Money needs the Elite plan.

Can ChatGPT replace a financial advisor?

No. OpenAI states that ChatGPT isn’t a fiduciary, a registered investment adviser, a broker-dealer or a tax preparer, and that its finance answers are for information and planning. ChatGPT is useful for organizing numbers, comparing scenarios and preparing questions. For decisions with legal, tax or investment consequences, talk to a qualified professional. AI Money isn’t a financial adviser either.

Does AI Money work with the free version of ChatGPT?

No. Free and Go can’t add custom connectors. On paid plans it depends: OpenAI’s help center (checked October 5, 2026) says connectors that can write, such as logging an expense, are in beta for Business, Enterprise and Edu, and that Pro connects with read-only access; Plus isn’t listed. Claude is the route AI Money has tested end to end, and it works on every Claude plan, Free included (one custom connector). AI Money needs the Elite plan.

Does ChatGPT use my financial data to train its models?

It depends on your settings. Conversations that use ChatGPT Finances, chats where you upload statements and chats that use AI Money all follow the training setting of your ChatGPT account. To opt out, turn off Improve the model for everyone in Settings › Data controls. Temporary chats aren’t used for training while they stay temporary, and rating a reply can still let OpenAI use that conversation.
