Personal finance MCP server: use AI Money from Claude or ChatGPT

Connect AI Money to Claude, or to ChatGPT if your plan allows it, and ask how your money is doing or log an expense without leaving the chat. Here’s how to set it up, what the assistant sees and what it can change.

AI Money’s personal finance MCP server connects the app to Claude, and to ChatGPT on the plans OpenAI allows, so you can ask your assistant how your money is doing, or have it log an expense, without leaving the chat. In Claude you add https://mcp.ai-money.app/mcp as a custom connector on any plan (Free allows one) and approve it with a one-time code from the AI Money app; in ChatGPT, it depends on your plan. The assistant reads a summary your phone keeps up to date, and anything that moves money or deletes waits for your OK. The connector is part of AI Money Elite.

What can you ask Claude or ChatGPT once AI Money is connected?

Questions answered with your own numbers, and requests AI Money carries out. Three examples with round figures:

How am I doing this month?

So far you’ve spent $1,850 of the $3,200 that came in. Dining is at $310 of its $450 budget, and rent, $1,200, is due on the 1st. Last month you spent $2,600.

Log $12 for lunch on my debit card.

Done: Lunch, $12, Food, from your checking account. You’ll see it the next time you open AI Money.

Add Netflix as a $15 monthly subscription and move $200 to savings.

Netflix is set up at $15 a month: AI Money adds it when you open the app, with an Undo button. Moving the $200 needs your OK, so AI Money will ask you on a card.

The assistant reads your summary, categories and account names. What it logs reaches AI Money like an entry sent by WhatsApp; anything else is a proposal AI Money applies or runs by you.

How do you connect AI Money to Claude?

From a computer, with AI Money Elite and any Claude account, free or paid:

  1. Open Claude on your computer, at claude.ai or in the Claude desktop app.
  2. Go to Customize › Connectors, click “+ Add” and choose “Add custom connector”.
  3. Name it AI Money and paste the addresshttps://mcp.ai-money.app/mcp, then click Continue. Leave the sign-in settings Claude detected as they are and click Add.
  4. Claude opens an AI Money page that asks for a code. If it doesn’t, click Connect next to AI Money.
  5. Get the code on your phone: in AI Money, go to Settings › AI assistants › Connect an assistant › Get the code. It has 8 characters and expires in 5 minutes.
  6. Check the page before you type the code. Make sure it will send you back to claude.ai, then enter the code and click Connect. Don’t read it out to anyone.
  7. Turn it on in a chat: click the “+” button at the bottom left, open Connectors and switch on AI Money.

AI Money gives Claude your up-to-date summary and lets it log your expenses, on any Claude plan.

Which Claude plans work, and can you use it on your phone?

All of them: Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Free allows one custom connector, and it can be AI Money; on Team and Enterprise, an owner adds it to the organization first (Anthropic’s guide). Once it’s set up, it also works in the Claude app for iOS and Android, Anthropic says. If Claude asks before using a tool, choose “Allow always” only for tools you trust.

How do you connect AI Money to ChatGPT?

In ChatGPT it depends on your plan: OpenAI’s help center (checked October 5, 2026) says connectors that can write, such as logging an expense, are in beta for Business, Enterprise and Edu, and that Pro connects with read-only access; Plus isn’t listed. Free and Go can’t add custom connectors. Claude is the route AI Money has tested end to end, and it works on every Claude plan, Free included (one custom connector). If your ChatGPT plan allows it, these are the steps, on the web:

  1. Turn on developer mode at chatgpt.com: Settings › Security and login › Developer mode.
  2. Create the server in Plugins. At chatgpt.com/plugins, click the + button and choose “Create custom MCP server”. Name it AI Money, paste https://mcp.ai-money.app/mcp, accept the risk warning and create it.
  3. Approve it with a code. ChatGPT opens the same AI Money page: get the code in the app, check that the page sends you back to chatgpt.com, enter the code and click Connect.
  4. Use it in a new chat: add AI Money from the tools menu, or type @ and pick it. If it isn’t there, install it from your plugins first.

OpenAI renames these menus from time to time, so the AI Money app keeps the current steps in Settings › AI assistants (OpenAI’s guide to custom MCP servers has the same flow).

What does the assistant see, and what doesn’t it?

A summary your phone builds with the same math as the app’s screens and uploads when something changes, so the assistant sees your numbers as of AI Money’s last update.

DataAssistant sees it?
Account balancesYes, each one

What is Log only?

Turn off “Let your assistant see your numbers” in Settings › AI assistants and the connection becomes Log only: only account and category names go up, with no amounts, so the assistant can log expenses and income but can’t tell you how your money is doing.

What changes on its own, and what needs your OK?

Only logging happens right away. Anything else is a proposal that waits in AI Money, handled by risk:

You ask forWhat AI Money does
An expense or incomeLogs it; you see it when you open the app
A budget (spending limit), savings goal, subscription, recurring payment or new account at zeroApplies it when you open the app, with a notice and Undo
Moving money, a new debt, a debt payment, paying your credit card, marking a bill paid, editing, removing or recategorizing transactionsShows you a card; nothing changes until you say yes
AI Money app, version 5.0 and later. Checked on October 5, 2026.

In the app’s own words: “Anything that moves money or deletes, the app always asks you first.” A proposal nobody confirms expires after 7 days.

What are the limits?

  • Elite only. Free and Pro don’t include it. AI Money checks your plan on every request: if Elite ends, the assistant tells you, and there’s nothing to disconnect.
  • Up to 5 assistants at once. Disconnect one in Settings › AI assistants and it loses access right away.
  • A summary, not your whole history. Today the assistant doesn’t search every transaction, so “How much did I spend on Uber in March?” only works if the answer is in the summary.
  • Daily caps. Up to 300 logged transactions and 30 proposals a day, to prevent abuse.

Is it safe to give Claude or ChatGPT access to your finances?

The connection uses OAuth: AI Money never sees your Claude or ChatGPT password, and the assistant never gets your AI Money password. Access keys are stored only as a fingerprint (hash), and when a new assistant connects, AI Money shows “You connected a new assistant” with an “It was me” button.

8 characters, 5 minutes: the one-time code from your phone that every new assistant needs before it can connect.

  • The summary lives on AI Money’s servers while an assistant is connected, even with cloud backup off, and it’s deleted when you disconnect the last one (section 3 of our privacy policy).
  • Your assistant’s provider handles what you ask (Anthropic for Claude, OpenAI for ChatGPT) under the terms of your account there. Whether your chats help train their models depends on your settings with them: Claude’s model improvement setting or ChatGPT’s Settings › Data controls.
  • It works without your bank. The assistant sees what you logged in AI Money: by hand, WhatsApp, voice, receipt photos, bank texts on Android, or Apple Pay and Google Pay alerts. AI Money isn’t a bank, broker or financial advisor, and an AI assistant doesn’t replace one.

How is it different from ChatGPT’s Finances, a pasted statement or a spreadsheet?

Each one fits a different need, and some do things AI Money doesn’t:

If you live in the US and want your bank to sync on its own, Finances in ChatGPT does that and AI Money doesn’t today. AI Money covers the rest: any country and currency, a budget without linking your bank, and Claude as well as ChatGPT (compare them in Claude vs ChatGPT for personal finance).

Frequently asked questions about AI Money in Claude and ChatGPT

Can I use AI Money with Claude’s free plan?

Yes. Claude’s free plan allows one custom connector, and that one can be AI Money. You add it from claude.ai or the Claude desktop app with the address https://mcp.ai-money.app/mcp, then approve it with a one-time code from the AI Money app. On AI Money’s side, the connector is part of the Elite plan, which costs $9.99 a month on the US App Store.

Does AI Money work with the free version of ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans can’t add custom connectors like AI Money’s. On other plans it depends: OpenAI’s help center (checked October 5, 2026) says connectors that can write, such as logging an expense, are in beta for Business, Enterprise and Edu, and that Pro connects with read-only access; Plus isn’t listed. Claude works on every plan, Free included. Finances in ChatGPT, OpenAI’s own feature for US bank accounts, is a separate product.

Is it safe to connect my finances to Claude or ChatGPT?

AI Money connects to Claude or ChatGPT through OAuth, so neither side sees the other’s password, and each connection needs a one-time code from your phone that expires in five minutes. The assistant reads a summary, not your full transaction list or payment details, and anything that moves money or deletes waits for your confirmation in AI Money. Disconnect an assistant and it loses access right away.

Can Claude or ChatGPT see my bank account through AI Money?

No. AI Money works without linking your bank, so Claude or ChatGPT only see what you’ve logged in AI Money: by hand, by WhatsApp, by voice, from receipt photos or, on Android, from bank texts. Whatever assistant you use, never give it your bank password, your full card number or your ID documents.

Can the assistant move money or delete transactions in AI Money?

Not on its own. The assistant can log an expense or income directly (in ChatGPT, only on plans that allow connectors to write) and propose other changes. AI Money applies the ones that only create something, like a budget or a savings goal, with an Undo button. Moving money, paying a debt or a card, and editing or deleting a transaction always show up as a card you confirm in the app.

Why doesn’t the assistant know what I spent at a store in March?

Because Claude or ChatGPT read a summary that AI Money prepares on your phone: this month and last month, balances, budgets, debts, upcoming payments, investments and your latest 20 transactions. Today that summary doesn’t include your full history, so questions about older months only work if the answer is in it. Your full history is still in the AI Money app.

What happens to the connection if my AI Money Elite plan ends?

AI Money checks your plan every time Claude or ChatGPT asks for something. If Elite has ended, the assistant tells you that your plan expired, and you don’t need to disconnect anything. Everything you logged stays in AI Money, and you can remove the assistant whenever you like in Settings › AI assistants.

Can I use AI Money in the Claude or ChatGPT app on my phone?

In Claude, yes: add the connector from a computer, at claude.ai or in the desktop app, and Anthropic says it becomes available in the Claude app for iOS and Android. For ChatGPT, AI Money’s steps are for chatgpt.com on the web, and OpenAI’s help center lists custom MCP apps as web only (checked October 5, 2026).
